A shop manager quit her job to resell second-hand clothing - and now makes up to $5k-a-month.

Stephanie Thornsburg, 43, ran a thrift shop for 16 years - before turning her side hustle of selling her old clothes online into a full-time career.

She started off listing the clothes in her wardrobe - but now makes a living buying and selling second-hand items.

As well as being able to pay herself a salary, Stephanie also uses it to support her two children, 23 and 18, with her husband, Luke, 44, a configuration lead.

Stephanie, from Cincinnati, Ohio, US, said: “I make money by spending time digging and finding the treasures - then putting them on the second-hand market.

“I was ready to be my own boss, too - really take the leap.

“I managed other people for 16 years, after a while, it gets a little overwhelming.

“Now, I’ve never been happier - I’m helping promote slow fashion and I have so much free time on my hands.”

The mum-of-two has always worked in the second-hand industry.

She was the first person to open up a “bricks-and-mortar buy-and-sell store” in her area.

Stephanie managed the shop for 16 years and often felt she had to give up her free time to help out.

“My kids were eight months and five years old at the time,” she said.

“I started out as a store manager - and ended up working my way to district manager.

“When you’re manager, you’re the one who has to end up going in and taking care of things.

“I had to come in on so many of my days off, and work lots of overtime.

“Even if I wasn’t at work, you still get phone calls, and you’re still needed.

“You’d be getting questions at any time of the day.

“I also had some crazy emergencies - like a kid once accidentally crashing his car into the front of our store.”

Other full-time clothing resellers would often come to Stephanie’s shop for “inventory” - which inspired her to make the transition.

She said: “Resellers would particularly come to our women’s and designer stores.

“People bought our stuff to try and sell it on and make some money.

“It piqued my interest that people can do this all by themselves - they don’t have to work for someone.”

In 2020, Stephanie started selling the clothes in her wardrobe as a side hustle - before branching out to other products bought at second-hand shops.

It took her four years to make enough money to replace her nine-to-five income.

She initially started out making $1k profit per month, and now has a turnover of $60k-a-year.

“The trick is to learn which brands sell well,” she said.

“The money comes in when you figure out what those pieces are.

“Size is a huge component for me.

“The average size of a woman in the US is a 16, so I often find sizes 10 and up perform the best.

“It took me a full year to profit $1k to $2k-a-month doing this as a side-hustle - now, it’s $4k to $5k.

“I’ve been able to make what I was making at my old job - but I’m my own boss, and continuing to grow.”

Wearing jewellery is second nature to most of us, it’s something we barely think about. Along with our clothes, hair, make-up, jewellery is an expression of our style, a statement of how we see ourselves in the world.
But unlike – say – a haircut or a new pair of jeans, jewellery reaches to something deeper. Crafted from precious metals and rare stones, our most treasured jewellery is often a token of love, given to mark a significant rite of passage in our lives: an important birthday, a wedding, a promise, an heirloom that links us to someone passed.

We invest the jewellery we love with special powers; these precious metals and stones become such a part of us that we feel lost without them – they seem to become connected to our personal strength and power.

Some might call it superstition, but for Hebden Bridge-based jeweller Toby Cotterill, it’s magic: “I think human beings are capable of magic.” he says, “We can all go beyond what we do in our everyday and get to a different place, and it can help us through hard times. I’m not saying that my jewellery is magic, it’s not me doing it, it’s people putting their emotions and memories and histories into a piece and giving it power.”

Throughout the world and since the beginning of time people have imbued jewellery with talismanic power. The objects we make from precious minerals and stones have been buried with us and long-outlasted skin and bone. Those ancient objects continue to exert an influence and connect us to the stories of people who lived before us.

In his tiny-but-perfectly-formed workshop in Hebden Bridge’s Northlight Studios, Toby sees himself as part of an ancient tradition, using tools and methods that jewellers and metalsmiths have refined and developed over thousands of years.

It’s a magical process to watch. Toby takes gold or silver, melts it, moulds it, cuts and hammers it, drills and files, heats it and plunges it into water, rolls it in sand – completely absorbed, at ease with his tools and lost in the making.

And somehow the metal takes on a new life, becomes something else – a shimmering beetle or fossil-like thing emerges. Something both ancient and alive at the same time, a moving, sparkling, precious thing with weight, something you want to touch…

One of four brothers, Toby’s childhood was spent in the hills and woods of the Welsh countryside: “Dad was a furniture maker, mum was a nurse.” he explains, “We didn’t have much money, but we were very happy. There was a move at the time toward self-sufficiency, so we had a small-holding, a few fields with maybe 20 sheep and a few pigs and cows. Mum and dad between them would work really hard, working the land and bringing us up. I think they wanted us to have that kind of childhood – grubby in the fields, learning the names of animals and plants and trees and just playing outside, making things.”

Devar bhabhi and rainI'm 23 years of age and will graduate as Doctor this year. This is story of me andmy Bhabhi. We were living as family in Mumbai with my Father (Who is abusinessman), Mother (Housewife), an elder brother Vijay (28 yrs of age andEngineer), his wife Sujata (My dear Bhabhi, 27 yrs of age and housewife) andmyself. We were very happy family. I was like younger brother to my Bhabhi.I had always respected my Bhabhi as my elder sister and we had very healthy andfriendly relationship. I used to discuss my girlfriends with her and used to tell herhow I proposed one and flirted with other and all that. Finally I fell in love withPuja who was also studying with me. Puja was nice girl with perfect figure, look andgood sense of humor but her one draw back was that she is short tempered andused to get angry on many small, small things. Bhabhi helped me a lot in thisrelationship. She also gave me money to buy gifts or other things for her and alsoadvised in events of strains in our relationship. My Bhabhi is very soft hearted andemotional person and I like this characteristic of her very much. And in look shewill certainly compete with any typical Bhabhi of Ekata Kaoor's serial and easily winover them. She is 5'5\

Tenby train station, is one of the busiest in West Wales during the summer season, however it appears that its platform postbox was not so well used by pictured postcard writers, and as such, has been taken out of use by Royal Mail, and repainted black to signify so.
John Perrett who took over station adoption duties at the seaside town five years ago, volunteering to offer his help after finding that he had more and more complaining to do to rail authorities about the poor appearance of the facility - many holidaymakers’ first impression of the resort - has been left, like many others, disgruntled that the traditional wall mounted red post box which has VR on it, denoting that Queen Victoria was monarch when its was installed, has been repainted black.
“I’m disappointed and annoyed that the post box on Tenby station has recently been taken out of use. As far as I know there was no consultation and as it's a listed building I am surprised it's been allowed,” said John.
“They could have blocked it up and painted the block red so it would blend in.
“I’ve used it numerous times over the last few years. It's only been blocked off in the last month.”
However, one local postie said that she believed that it had been decommissioned due to its lack of use and also lack of maintenance to keep it functional.
“I’ve collected from that box every day for the last year or so, but I’ve collected one postcard!” said Anto O'Hara, responding to a post on Facebook about the matter.
“The door is cracked on the inside and is pinned together with screws. It got to a stage that I couldn’t open the door hence why it has been decommissioned.”
This was backed up by former local postman Martin Vickery who commented: “As a former postie who collected from it for years, we were lucky to get more than a couple of letters a week, and some times none at all, but it should be red like other boxes which are out of use.
“Shame they did not paint the station at the same time!”
One person responding however, called Royal Mail’s actions ‘sacrilege’.
“Should have just been blocked up - that's sacrilege, especially with it being a queen Victoria one!” they remarked.
Other locals admitted that they didn’t even know that a post box was located there; whilst many criticised Network Mail’s continued lack of upkeep at the station, labelling it a ‘filthy rubbish strewn embarrassment’ rather than the ‘pretty, inviting station’ it used to be.
Sharing feedback she’d receieved after raising the matter with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, County councillor for Tenby’s south ward Cllr Sam Skyrme Blackhall said: “Royal Mail typically paint listed boxes black when decommissioned. The box is included in the listing for the station.”
Senedd Member for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Sam Kurtz said it was ‘disappointing’ and vowed to write to Royal Mail.
